Energy Performance and Fire Safety of Buildings
Euralarm, representing the electronic fire safety and security industry in Europe, today celebrates the European Parliament’s plenary vote in favour of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) ; a major step towards decarbonisation of the building stock.
Better performing buildings also means safer and more secure buildings. Every year, EU countries face major fires in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings, taking lives of thousands of European citizens and causing considerable environmental damage. This can be avoided through the deployment of integrated fire safety and security technologies.
Electrification of buildings involves the integration of new technologies – such as on-site production of renewable energy, batteries and recharging infrastructure – which can increase the risk of fire. Therefore, significant changes in fire safety and security measures are required. They must be carefully evaluated by qualified individuals and companies.
Regarding national building renovation plans, we call on EU policymakers and Member States to make sure that fire safety and security are taken in due consideration and to create incentives for all renovated buildings to be equipped with the latest fire safety and security technologies.
The 5 000 companies represented within Euralarm are ready to contribute to the successful implementation of the directive at Member State level to make EU buildings more energy-efficient while bringing the fire safety and security to the next level.
